Illustrative learning line · not a live skill record
YOUR STARTING POINT
New surfers, or anyone who can stand with a push and wants a clearer foundation. Tell the team about your swimming confidence and any previous lessons before booking.
01 / THE SKILLS
Build it one part at a time.
01 / CONTROL
Get comfortable with the board
Warm up; recognise the board and leash; practise getting onto the board, prone balance and paddling turns. Learn safe spacing, falls and exits.
02 / POP-UP
Connect the movement
Read the direction of whitewater, move the board through it and connect the push-up, leg movement and foot placement into one pop-up.
03 / RIDE
Finish the whole ride
Work on stance, gaze and balance. Practise a straight ride, a controlled exit and a safe route back outside the riding line.
02 / LESSONS & LEARNING UNITS
See the work behind each stage.
Open a lesson to explore each skill and its purpose. Lesson codes describe the curriculum, not a number of days or a fixed booking package. Your starting ability and the conditions shape the plan.
G1-1Surf warm-upLesson content
Surf warm-up
Prepare your shoulders, hips and ankles for the movements in the session.
Surf equipment
Recognise the board and leash and learn how to use them correctly.
Surf safety
Build safe habits around spacing, protecting your head and responding to a fall.
Getting onto the board
Get onto the board with control and establish balance before rushing the next movement.
Prone position
Find your balance while lying on the board and keep your body and the nose steady.
Paddling turns
Stay prone and maintain forward movement while changing the board’s direction in a wider arc.
G1-2Understanding whitewaterLesson content
Understanding whitewater
Read the direction and energy of broken waves and recognise whitewater suited to the exercise.
Board control through whitewater
Practise moving through approaching whitewater while keeping control of the board.
Push-off from the seabed
Practise an independent push-off in water depth selected by the coach, then connect it to the pop-up.
Pop-up
Connect the push-up, movement of your legs and foot placement into one pop-up.
Safe dismount
Finish the ride with a controlled dismount that protects you and people nearby.
G1-3Basic surfing stanceLesson content
Basic surfing stance
Use foot placement, balance and gaze to support a stable ride.
Straight riding
Maintain balance through a complete straight ride near shore.
Spacing between waves
Observe the gaps between waves when deciding when to start and return.
Returning safely
Return to the training position without crossing other surfers’ riding lines.
G1 assessment
A coach assesses independent performance in suitable assessment conditions.
02 / A TRAINING RHYTHM
Prepare. Practise. Review.
This sequence illustrates how the skills can connect. It is not a fixed timetable or a promise to pass within a set number of days. Session count, duration, location and teaching language must be confirmed with the Kuta team.
01
Board handling and land-based pop-up practice.
02
Connect the pop-up to a suitable near-shore whitewater ride.
03
Review stance and safe exits, then repeat the part that needs work.
04 / ASSESSMENT REFERENCE
G1 assessment: what each band means.
Published SURFPLUS criteria, presented as a learning reference. A coach assesses independent performance in valid conditions using video evidence. This page does not assess you or create a learner record. Confirm local assessment arrangements before booking.
Assessment wave condition
Wave height < 0.3 m
60 points
Minimum pass
Stand steadily and ride straight for more than 3 seconds
The movement does not have to be fully fluid
No grabbing the leash, colliding with others or unsafe dismounting
60–80 points
Achieved, but not yet consistent
The pop-up has a slight pause or deviation
Able to hold the standing position
Straight ride lasting more than 3 seconds
No evident safety risk throughout the attempt
80–100 points
Consistent performance
A connected pop-up, correct stance, stable foot placement and balance
Straight ride lasting more than 5 seconds
Success rate above 60% across multiple attempts, with a safe dismount
Passing an assessment, recording a level, and applying for or receiving a certificate are separate states. Wave height describes assessment conditions; the coach still decides whether the situation is safe and valid.
If a skill is not yet consistent, discuss the specific gap, targeted practice and review with the team. Confirm any further-session or equipment fees separately.
04 / BEFORE YOU BOOK
A clear plan starts with a conversation.
Equipment and preparation
Ask the team to confirm a suitable board and leash, clothing for the conditions and sun protection. Confirm what is supplied, any rental cost, sizing and what you should bring.
Tell us about your starting point
Share your previous experience, confidence in the water, preferred dates, group size and teaching language. A recent surfing clip can help the team understand your starting point if you choose to share one.
Price, dates and inclusions
Current Kuta prices are confirmed by enquiry. Ask about currency, sessions and duration, equipment, recording, accommodation, transport, insurance, cancellation terms and any follow-up training charges. No booking or payment is taken on this page.
Suitable conditions come first
The on-site team decides whether conditions and the training area are suitable for your ability. Do not use a website level label as permission to enter unfamiliar conditions.
G1 introduces the foundations. The team still needs to confirm your water confidence, relevant health considerations and suitable conditions before booking.
Can I skip a level?
Discuss equivalent experience with the team. A label from a previous course is useful context, but the next plan should follow your current observed ability.
Are certification and repeat lessons included?
Do not assume they are included. Confirm any assessment, certificate, validity period, repeat-session fee and participating location before booking. Completing a course and being certified are separate matters.
