THE CAPABILITY TO BUILD

Paddle for suitable whitewater independently and connect the catch, pop-up and ride.

YOUR STARTING POINT

Surfers building on safe board handling and basic pop-ups. If you are starting from zero, ask the team to include the foundations rather than assume you can skip them.

Build it one part at a time.

01 / PADDLE

Build useful speed

Maintain a balanced prone position. Practise paddle rhythm and entry position so you move towards the wave instead of waiting to be pushed.

02 / TIMING

Turn speed into a take-off

Recognise the start window and connect your final strokes, push-up and foot placement without losing the wave.

03 / READ

Know what you are catching

Distinguish broken whitewater from unbroken waves. Small unbroken-wave exercises can introduce G3; they are not the core G2 whitewater goal.

G2-1Prone paddlingLesson content
Prone paddling
Keep your balance and the nose steady while developing a repeatable paddling movement.
Paddling efficiency
Build useful speed through paddling rhythm and hand entry.
Catching whitewater
Paddle to catch suitable whitewater independently instead of waiting for a push.
When to start paddling
Start before the whitewater reaches you and work on the timing of the catch.
Connecting the catch and pop-up
Connect the final paddle strokes, push-up and foot placement without breaking the sequence.
G2-2Whitewater and unbroken wavesLesson content
Whitewater and unbroken waves
Distinguish broken whitewater from unbroken waves and understand their different training demands.
Take-off timing on small unbroken waves
Explore timing as a transition towards G3; it does not replace the minimum G2 requirement to catch whitewater independently.
G2 assessment
Distinguish the minimum whitewater standard from the higher band introducing unbroken-wave take-offs.

The additional stance work reuses the G1 skill; it is not a new G2 lesson.

Prepare. Practise. Review.

This sequence illustrates how the skills can connect. It is not a fixed timetable or a promise to pass within a set number of days. Session count, duration, location and teaching language must be confirmed with the Kuta team.

  1. 01

Check the foundations and practise efficient paddling.

  2. 02

Repeat whitewater catches and the transition into pop-ups.

  3. 03

Compare wave types and review independent attempts.

G2 assessment: what each band means.

Published SURFPLUS criteria, presented as a learning reference. A coach assesses independent performance in valid conditions using video evidence. This page does not assess you or create a learner record. Confirm local assessment arrangements before booking.

Assessment wave condition

Wave height < 0.3 m

Transition 1: Independent whitewater take-offTransition 2: Introduction to unbroken-wave take-offs
60 points

Minimum pass | Independent whitewater take-off

  • Independently paddle to catch suitable whitewater
  • Be carried by the whitewater and complete the pop-up and ride
  • Stand steadily and ride straight for more than 3 seconds
  • No grabbing the leash, colliding with others or unsafe dismounting
60–80 points

Transition 1 | Independent whitewater take-off; judgement or consistency still developing

  • Independently paddle to catch suitable whitewater and complete the pop-up
  • Turn into a prone position and start paddling
  • No evident safety risk throughout the attempt
80–100 points

Transition 2 | Introduction to unbroken-wave take-offs

  • Consistently, safely and independently paddle into unbroken waves
  • Actively observe and choose suitable unbroken waves
  • Independently connect the turn, start, paddling, pop-up and safe ride
  • A high success rate across multiple attempts

Passing an assessment, recording a level, and applying for or receiving a certificate are separate states. Wave height describes assessment conditions; the coach still decides whether the situation is safe and valid.

Independent whitewater take-offs are the minimum pass. Introduction to unbroken-wave take-offs appears in the higher band; it is not an additional minimum-pass requirement.

If a skill is not yet consistent, discuss the specific gap, targeted practice and review with the team. Confirm any further-session or equipment fees separately.

A clear plan starts
with a conversation.

Equipment and preparation

Ask the team to confirm a suitable board and leash, clothing for the conditions and sun protection. Confirm what is supplied, any rental cost, sizing and what you should bring.

Tell us about your starting point

Share your previous experience, confidence in the water, preferred dates, group size and teaching language. A recent surfing clip can help the team understand your starting point if you choose to share one.

Price, dates and inclusions

Current Kuta prices are confirmed by enquiry. Ask about currency, sessions and duration, equipment, recording, accommodation, transport, insurance, cancellation terms and any follow-up training charges. No booking or payment is taken on this page.

Suitable conditions come first

The on-site team decides whether conditions and the training area are suitable for your ability. Do not use a website level label as permission to enter unfamiliar conditions.

Know what you are
signing up for.

Does G2 mean I can already surf unbroken waves?

Its core goal is independent whitewater catching. An introduction to small unbroken waves is a transition; stable unbroken-wave take-offs belong to the G3 learning path.

Can I skip a level?

Discuss equivalent experience with the team. A label from a previous course is useful context, but the next plan should follow your current observed ability.

Are certification and repeat lessons included?

Do not assume they are included. Confirm any assessment, certificate, validity period, repeat-session fee and participating location before booking. Completing a course and being certified are separate matters.
